Artist's Statement

Art is about giving form to those ideas and feelings that leave us speechless. When people view my work, I would like them to feel a tug at the sleeve, an urge to step slightly closer, to understand that we are all being tossed through space by the same big bang (or big hand, as the case may be).

I often begin a piece with a concept or single image, or even a title, and then proceed to build a world around it. Graphic design is one of my strengths, and I use it to entice the viewer into investing time into searching out the detail of the work. Whether a mixed-media collage or a digital montage, my work is tactile and textured and built with layers both open and clandestine.

I am fascinated by the nature of time. As a young boy, I remember sitting through a church sermon in which the minister showed the congregation an old photograph of a forgotten gold miner of 1849. He explained that the man had lived, been photographed, but had soon died and become forgotten. That started my obsession with the passage of time that dominates the theme of my current work. I find myself playing with the idea of time as illusion, the nature of nostalgia, and the enigma of future self. These are the things that leave me speechless, that keep me awake at 3:30 in the morning. My art is my way of giving it all substance.
